Q. What is infertility?
A. Infertility is medically defined as inability to achieve pregnancy by a heterosexual couple despite frequent, regular unprotected vaginal intercourse over 12 months.
Q. What about same sex couple?
A. Couples using artificial insemination with donor or partners sperm are best advised to seek expert advice after 6 cycles.
Q. Must we wait for 12 months before expert advice?
A. No. You should discuss your concerns with your GP before 12 months especially if you are above 35 years of age or have past gynaecological history, such as subfertility, ectopic pregnancy, endometriosis, absence of periods e.t.c.
Q. How common is infertility?
A. Infertility is common. 1 in 7 couples experience difficulty in achieving pregnancy.
Q. Do most infertile couples require InVitro Fertilisation (IVF) to achieve pregnancy?
A. No. Most young couples, will achieve pregnancy within 6 to 12 months of seeing fertility expert without the need for IVF. Overall, about one in three subfertile women will require assisted conception (IUI & IVF).
Q, What factors make it more likely that we would reqire IVF early?
A. 1. Female Age > 38 years, 2. unprotected intercourse 5 to 10 years. 3. Never achieved viable pregnancy before.
Q. What are the main causes of infertility?
A. 1. Male problems, mainly sperm issues; 2. Female problems, mainly ovulation related, endometrioisis and fallopian tubes issues; 3. Others, which could be male or female, as well as unknown.

Q. When is IVF recommended as primary treatment?
A. Women with both tubes blocked, Men with severe sperm problems or no sperms at all will require IVF/ICSI. Some clinicians recommend IVF early if female age is above 38 years.
Q. Any other reasons for IVF?
A. Any of the causes of infertility could be a reason for IVF – Moderate to Severe endometriosis, resistant PCOS etc.
Q.What about egg freezing?
A. More recently, IVF has proved invaluble in the following category of petients: 1. Individuals who are about to undergo cancer treatment; 2. Couples who wish to screen the embryo for inherited disorder before embryo transfer (PGD), and women/couple who wish to freeze their eggs because they wish delay family for social reasons.
